May 9, 2024
On Thursday, May 9, R&DE hosted a vibrant celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month at the EVGR Pavilion. This event was part of R&DE’s ongoing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives, highlighting the richness of the AAPI community among students, faculty, and staff.
The celebration featured a keynote address by Lori Nishiura Mackenzie, Co-Founder of Stanford’s VMWare Women’s Leadership Innovation Lab. Lori delivered an insightful and engaging presentation on the history of AAPI communities, her personal experiences, and the role of inclusivity in fostering a more equitable workplace.
Attendees participated in interactive educational activities, including a geography and flag exercise, as well as trivia with prizes. A special highlight of the celebration was the diverse selection of AAPI-inspired foods served by Stanford Dining, Hospitality & Auxiliaries (SDHA). The menu featured a wide array of dishes representing the culinary traditions of various AAPI regions, allowing attendees to experience the flavors of the cultures being honored.
Dr. Shirley J. Everett delivered both the welcoming and closing remarks, encouraging the R&DE community to continue upholding the core value of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The event concluded with a lively reception, where attendees connected over shared stories, delicious food, and a deeper appreciation for AAPI heritage.
