Welcome Home

The 2026-27 House and Room Selection application portal opens on March 3 and applications are due April 14!

  • Log in to MyHousing.Stanford.edu
  • Select Undergraduate Housing Application
  • Select the quarter for which you are applying (the quarter you plan to move in)
  • Follow the prompts to apply for housing
  • Be sure that you submit the application

Stanford uses a self-select model for autumn undergraduate housing assignments to specific houses and rooms. This way of selecting housing increases transparency in the process and gives students more agency by allowing them to make decisions in real time based on exactly what is available when it is their time to pick a house and room. Read on for important details about what you need to do in order to secure 2026-27 undergraduate housing.

Application Deadlines

Summer housing 2026 and autumn quarter House and Room Selection applications are due by 5 p.m. PT on Tuesday, April 14.

If you are requesting a disability-related accommodation, you must submit your Housing Accommodation Request Form (HARF) to the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) by March 6. You will need to submit the housing applications by March 13.

If you are making a religious observance request, you will need to submit the housing application by April 8. If you are submitting a religious observance request that cannot be handled through the application, you must also submit the request through the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life (ORSL) by April 8.

House and Room Selection - How It Works

  • Submit your autumn quarter housing application in the MyHousing.Stanford.edu portal by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. On this application, you will sign the residence agreement, form a group if desired, and indicate your gender (see below for details). While the application is due on April 14, you may continue to change your group makeup until 8 a.m. PT on May 18 if you are going through House and Room Selection (if you are not requesting a disability-related housing accommodation or submitting a religious observance request).
  • Groups may consist of up to four students. Only students who pick both their residence and room in Self-Select during General House and Room Selection may form groups.
  • Students with disability-related housing accommodation requests and/or Religious Observance Requests will not go through House and Room Selection, as they will be hand assigned by R&DE Student Housing Assignments staff.
  • On Thursday, May 21, you will be emailed your gate time, which is the date and time you can begin selecting your house and room for next year. If you are part of a group, every member of the group will have the same gate time. Gate times are randomly assigned within each class year. Seniors have the first set of gate times, followed by juniors, and then sophomores.  If you are in a group with a mix of class years, your gate time will be assigned based on the lowest class year. For example, a group of two seniors and a junior will receive a junior gate time. While all members of a group will have the same gate time, they are not guaranteed any specific assignment together. A group's ability to live together is dependent upon what housing options remain at the group's gate time.
  • House and Room Selection will begin on Friday, May 22, when preassigned students select rooms within their preassigned houses. It will resume on Tuesday, May 26 and run through Friday, May 29, with gate times running from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. PT daily. House and Room Selection will close at 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 29.
  • A link to the Room Availability Dashboard will be available in the MyHousing portal during House and Room selection, and you will have the opportunity to access it before or during your time slot. At your gate time, log into the housing portal via MyHousing.Stanford.edu to see exactly which rooms are available. Select and confirm your house and room assignment. More detailed instructions on this process will be included in your gate time email.
  • You may continue going into the system to change your house and room assignment up until House and Room Selection closes at 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 29.
  • While you do not have to select your room right at your gate time, be advised that waiting will mean fewer options available to you when you do select. A small number of groups will share each gate time and the interval between gate times will be determined by the overall number of groups. Details will be included in your gate time email.
  • If you do not select a room before 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 29, you will remain unassigned, but you will be eligible for assignment over the summer months.

What if I’m not available at my gate time?

If you are a member of a group, any of your groupmates will be able to act as a proxy and select an assignment for you beginning at your gate time. Groups may want to appoint one person in the group to be the proxy for everyone in the group in order to make selecting easier. More information about selecting as a proxy for a groupmate will be included in your gate time email which will be sent on Thursday, May 21.

To submit your House and Room Selection application:

  • Log onto MyHousing.Stanford.edu
  • Select Undergraduate Housing Application
  • Select the quarter for which you are applying (the quarter you plan to move in)
  • Follow the prompts to apply for housing
  • Be sure to submit the application

Housing Guarantee

All students with guarantee quarters remaining who apply by the House and Room Selection deadline will receive a housing assignment before autumn quarter. However, some sophomores, as well as students with no guarantee quarters remaining, will be unassigned after the first round of House and Room Selection. These students will fill vacancies that open up over the summer months.

Selection Order

During General House and Room Selection, rising seniors will get the earliest gate times and be able to pick first. Rising juniors will have gate times that begin after the seniors. Rising sophomores will have gate times that begin after the juniors. Students out of housing guarantee quarters will have the latest gate times.

HOUSE AND ROOM SELECTION IS A THREE ROUND PROCESS

Every undergraduate with housing guarantee quarters remaining will receive an assignment during one of the three assignment rounds and prior to the start of autumn quarter.

The first round of House and Room Selection takes place in May. At the conclusion of this round, some students will remain unassigned, as all available rooms will have been selected. However, over the summer a significant number of undergraduate students cancel their housing assignments, creating additional availability. The second round of House and Room Selection takes place in July to fill these newly opened spaces.

A third round follows on a rolling basis, as additional spaces become available after the July selection period and leading up to the start of autumn quarter.

We understand that being unassigned after the first round can feel stressful, but please know that students who remain unassigned at this stage are still guaranteed housing as long as they participate in the subsequent assignment rounds. In fact, some students assigned later in the summer end up in highly desirable housing locations that become available due to cancellations.

Again, every undergraduate with housing guarantee quarters remaining will receive an assignment prior to the start of autumn quarter if they apply by the April 14 deadline and participate in the various assignment rounds.

Groups and Roommate Finding

Only students who select their residence in Self-Select during General House and Room Selection may form groups. Students who do not select their residence in Self-Select but receive priority assignment due to special circumstances – students with approved disability-based accommodations, students selected for pre-assignment to theme houses, and students with religious observance requests – cannot form groups.

For students eligible to form groups, you will be able to form a group on your application by clicking “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application. Groups may consist of up to four students. If you are in a group with a mix of class years, your gate time will be assigned based on the lowest class year. For example, a group of two seniors and a junior will receive a junior gate time.

If you are the first of your group to apply, you will establish a group name and password. If you are joining a group, you will enter the name and password established by the first group member to apply.

Although the deadline to apply for House and Room Selection is April 14, students will be able to edit the group information on their housing applications until 8 a.m. on May 18.

ROOMMATE FINDING

On your application, you will be asked to answer a series of profile questions. These questions can help you if you do not currently have a housing group and are looking to find someone with whom to form a group. While everyone is required to answer the questions, you can choose to hide this information from other students.

To use the roommate finding function, select “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application and then click “Suggest Roommates.” Based on your responses, you will see a compatibility percentage for other students who have submitted applications and chosen not to keep their profile information hidden. The number of students visible in roommate finding will increase as more students submit applications. While students’ names are not visible in roommate finding, you can see students’ gender identity and cohort, as well as their responses to the profile questions. If you would like to form a group with someone, you can send them a message through the housing system in order to introduce yourself. To check for received messages, click the hamburger menu next to Home and select “Messages.” Please note that messages sent through the housing portal are accessible to R&DE Student Housing Assignments. Please exercise caution if you mutually determine to communicate outside of the housing portal.

University Theme Houses

If you are interested in a university theme house, you should investigate pre-assignments through the Res Ed website

All students, including students who are participating in the pre-assignment process for theme residences, must sign the residence agreement and submit their housing applications by the relevant application deadline. Pre-assignment results will be announced by ResEd on May 13. Even though the housing application is due on April 14, students will have the ability to edit their groups up until 8 a.m. PT on Monday, May 18. This will give students the opportunity to adjust their groups based on the pre-assignment results.

If a student is applying for pre-assignment and is also requesting a disability accommodation and/or is making a religious observance request, they will need to meet the earlier application deadline.

If one or more students in a group are selected to pre-assign into a theme house, those students will be assigned to the theme house(s) and the other group members will go through the house and room selection process.

Students who successfully pre-assign will be assigned a gate time but will only be able to select a room within their pre-assigned residence.

Coterms

Students with coterm status who are currently seniors or beyond (i.e. students who matriculated in 2022 or earlier) may apply for either graduate or undergraduate housing if they have guarantee quarters remaining. They may not apply for both processes.

Coterm students who will have conferred their undergraduate degrees before autumn or who have used all of their guarantee quarters are only eligible to apply for graduate housing.

Coterm students who are currently juniors or sophomores and will have guarantee quarters remaining are only eligible for undergraduate housing.

The Graduate Housing Lottery will open on April 1 and applications are due on Thursday, April 30. More information about the Graduate Housing Lottery will be available on the graduate housing section of our website in early April.

Coterms with housing guarantee quarters who are applying for undergraduate housing should complete their undergraduate housing applications before the April 14 deadline (or March 13 if they are requesting a disability accommodation). Coterm students not requesting housing accommodations or pre-assigning will then participate in the House and Room Selection process like all other undergraduates and will select at the same time as the seniors.

Please remember that a meal plan is required in all undergraduate residences, except Mirrielees. Students who transition from undergraduate to graduate status mid-year may not be eligible to move from undergraduate to graduate housing and students will not be granted meal plan waivers due to coterm status. Students with financial need should consult Financial Aid.

Reassignment Requests

If you are not satisfied with the room you selected, you will have an opportunity to apply for a reassignment. We anticipate receiving housing cancelations over the summer. House and Room Selection will open again for students who went through House and Room Selection in May to change their house and/or room selections from July 13 through July 17.

For students unable to find a more preferred room during the self-select reassignment period and for students who went through the disability accommodation, preassignment, or religious observance request processes, reassignment applications can be submitted through Axess beginning July 20. Reassignments are done each quarter once all incoming students have been assigned, and end at the end of the fifth week of the quarter.

To apply for reassignment in Axess:

  • Go to MyHousing.Stanford.edu
  • Select Undergraduate Housing Application
  • Navigate to the application through which you were assigned to housing
  • Select Apply for Reassignment
  • Follow the prompts to complete the application
