Coterminal Student Housing Policy

  • Stanford undergraduates who are admitted into a co-terminal graduate program are considered continuing students and will have two years of low assignment priority in the Lottery once they are eligible for graduate housing.
  • Coterminal students who are currently seniors or beyond (i.e. students who matriculated in 2022 or earlier) may apply for either graduate or undergraduate housing if they have guarantee quarters remaining. They may not apply for both processes.
  • Coterminal students who have conferred their undergraduate degrees by the start of autumn or who have used all of their guaranteed quarters are only eligible to apply for graduate housing.
  • Coterminal students who are currently juniors or sophomores and who have guaranteed quarters remaining are only eligible for undergraduate housing.
  • We anticipate that we will be able to accommodate coterminal students seeking graduate housing as long as they are willing to accept any assignment within graduate housing, including off-campus subsidized housing.

Applying for Graduate Housing

Information on applying as a graduate student can be found at theLottery.stanford.edu.

To increase your chances of being assigned:

  • Apply by the first round lottery deadline, which is in the spring quarter.
  • To improve your chances of being assigned to your desired housing, rank ALL apartment locations in the order you would like to be assigned until you have no further preferences.
  • Pay close attention to the Final Choice on your application which indicates whether or not you are willing to live in any residence for which you are eligible.
  • If you select "assign me to any residence for which I am eligible," you could be assigned to any housing option except the Munger, the GSB Residences, off-campus subsidized housing (except Oak Creek Apartments), or premium studios (for single students). You must specifically list these options on your application to be considered. The system will assign you to a residence that is left over at the end of the process.
  • If you select "assign me only to the residences I have listed" you will not be assigned if we cannot assign you one of your preferences.
  • If you aren’t assigned in the first round, apply for the subsequent assignment rounds in the myHousing portal when you view your results. The Second-round Autumn Assignments are processed in July and the Rolling Assignments are processed from August - October.
