Residences for Couples without Children

Graduate and undergraduate students who are married or in a domestic partnership with a partner who will co-occupy an apartment with them at least 50% of each week are eligible to live in graduate couples housing. A domestic partnership is defined as two adults who have chosen to share one another's lives in an intimate and committed relationship. Couples housing is not intended for friend pairs, siblings, parents, or members of a student's extended family.

Information for Undergraduate Students
Undergraduates may not apply for couples housing for summer if they are currently in single student housing and are applying for single student housing for the following year. Undergraduate students applying for Couples without Children housing are not guaranteed this type of housing and have no priority unless:

  • They are legally married or in a legal domestic partnership, with supporting documentation, OR they are seven years removed from high school and therefore eligible for graduate housing,
  • AND have undergraduate guarantee quarters remaining.

Housing Options
Couples without children are primarily assigned to premium studios and one-bedroom apartments. Most of the one-bedroom apartments are located in Escondido Village mid-rise buildings. There are a limited number of one-bedroom apartments in Escondido Village low-rises, the GSB Residences and Munger Graduate Residence.

Premium studios are located in Escondido Village Graduate Residences, Escondido Village Kennedy Graduate Residences and Munger Graduate Residence. Smaller standard studios are also an option for couples in Escondido Village, but are primarily intended to house one single student.

There are a very limited number of one-bedroom plus den low-rise apartments in Escondido Village and two-bedroom apartments in Escondido Village low-rises and Escondido Village Graduate Residences that are offered to couples after the demand for single graduate housing has been met.

Apartments for couples without children are furnished with a queen-sized bed with the exception of the Escondido Village standard studios that are furnished with full-sized extra long beds.

In situations where both spouses/partners are Stanford students, only one student must be enrolled to maintain eligibility for housing.

Off-campus Subsidized Housing Options for 2026-27

While off-campus housing choices will be available to rank on the 2026-27 Lottery application, assignment to these spaces will be based on the overall applicant demand. Because we do not know the number of spaces we will assign off-campus, students listing these choices should also rank on-campus housing options. It is important to note that students assigned to these off-campus complexes may have to consolidate within a complex or relocate to campus during the academic year if demand for housing changes. Students will not be able to renew for 2027-28.

Students in off-campus complexes are not able to renew their contracts and must join the Lottery each year.

Click here for a chart of general information about all the apartment complexes and click on the individual complexes below for more detailed descriptions and pictures. These subsidized off-campus apartments may not be available after August 2027.

Off-Campus Housing

Rental housing is available near Stanford, but the University is located in a highly desirable suburban area in the heart of Silicon Valley. Consequently, off-campus rental rates are relatively high compared to many other regions of the United States and even other parts of the Bay Area.

If you decide to live off campus, plan to arrive at Stanford at least two weeks early to take advantage of a wider range of housing choices.

You can check local rental listings, accessible only to Stanford students and affiliates, at Student Housing’s Community Housing website. You will be directed from there to the rental listings, which are available through the Places4Students website. You will either need a Stanford email address to view the rental listings, or may contact Housing Assignments for a temporary password.
