Our theme for Juneteenth was, “Unity in Freedom: A Juneteenth Commemoration”. The scheduled programs encapsulated both the essence and spirit of this national holiday, commemorating the date that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas became free. Under General Order No. 3, issued by General Gordon Granger, on June 19th, 1865, African Americans in Texas could realize the freedoms President Abraham Lincoln had promised them more than two years earlier with the Emancipation Proclamation. That journey continued as we worked together to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive university and nation. Juneteenth has been commemorated in communities across America since becoming a federal holiday in 2021. To learn more about the history of Juneteenth, please click here.
