Health, Safety and Sustainability

The Health, Safety, and Sustainability team is committed to fostering a safe, resilient, and environmentally responsible campus. Through proactive risk management, resource conservation, and operational excellence, we support Stanford Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) long-term sustainability and safety goals. Our experts ensure compliance, preparedness, and efficiency across key areas, including security, emergency preparedness, fleet management, safety, sustainability, and technical training.

Sustaining Excellence: Advancing Safety & Sustainability
Our dedicated professionals focus on three key areas:

  • Enhancing Energy & Resource Efficiency – We support various cutting-edge energy management strategies, water conservation efforts, and waste reduction programs to minimize environmental impact and optimize operational performance.
  • Promoting Sustainable & Safe Practices – From composting and recycling initiatives to responsible sourcing, green building standards, and workplace safety programs, we integrate solutions that protect both people and the environment.
  • Driving Innovation & Climate Action – We support innovation and climate action through comprehensive sustainability initiatives and student-led projects that reduce waste, optimize resource efficiency, and actively contribute to Stanford’s mission of achieving zero waste by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, fostering a healthier and more sustainable future for all.

We ensure every aspect of R&DE operations aligns with our health, safety, and sustainability commitments. Through strategic planning, continuous improvement, and proactive risk management, we create a safer, greener, and more efficient environment for the Stanford community.

Access and Security

Enhancing Safety Across R&DE Facilities

R&DE is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors by providing proactive security measures, regular inspections, and dedicated security support across residences and dining halls.

  • CARE Officer Program – Trained CARE officers conduct security rounds, respond to incidents, and provide support to enhance safety and awareness in R&DE-managed spaces.
  • Building Security Inspections – Regular security assessments help identify vulnerabilities, reinforce access controls, and ensure compliance with campus safety protocols.
  • Community Engagement & Safety Awareness – Collaborating with residential staff and students to foster a culture of security awareness through education, emergency preparedness, and response planning.

Through these efforts, R&DE strengthens campus security, reduces risks, and ensures a safe living and dining experience for the Stanford community.

Sustainability and Utilities

Advancing R&DE’s Green Initiatives

R&DE actively supports Stanford’s sustainability goals by reducing energy, water, and waste consumption, fostering sustainable behaviors, and integrating long-term environmental strategies into our operations.

  • Resource Efficiency – Implementing smart energy systems, water-efficient fixtures, and waste reduction programs to minimize environmental impact.
  • Campus Collaboration – Engaging students and staff through sustainability education, an internship program, behavior change initiatives, and research-driven projects.
  • Long-Term Commitment – Aligning facility operations, procurement, and planning with Stanford’s climate and sustainability objectives for a greener future.

Through these efforts, R&DE ensures a more sustainable and efficient campus for students and staff alike.

Emergency Preparedness

MCP's Commitment to Emergency Preparedness

MCP plays a critical role in preparing for and responding to emergencies, ensuring the safety and resilience of our campus. In addition to participating in annual University-wide emergency exercises, we conduct ongoing planning and preparedness sessions to address a wide range of potential situations, including:

  • Natural Disasters & Utility Failures – Developing response strategies for earthquakes, fires, floods, and extended utility outages, ensuring minimal disruption and a swift recovery.
  • Public Health & Safety Threats – Preparing for public health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, and coordinating responses to active threats to protect the campus community.
  • Collaborative Training & Drills – Partnering with University departments and local agencies to conduct scenario-based drills, emergency simulations, and response training for staff and leadership.

By proactively planning for these scenarios, MCP ensures swift, effective responses to protect students, staff, and facilities in any crisis.

Emergency Preparedness

Occupational Health and Safety

Ensuring a Safe Work Environment

R&DE prioritizes health, safety, and compliance by proactively identifying and mitigating workplace hazards, conducting regular inspections, and fostering a culture of safety awareness.

  • Hazard Identification & Compliance – Conducting incident investigations, physical condition inspections, and targeted area assessments to help a safe environment.
  • Training & Preparedness – Providing compliance training and safety committee meetings to equip staff with essential knowledge and best practices.
  • Ongoing Oversight & Leadership – Managing Hazardous Waste Accumulation Areas (HWAA) and holding leadership safety meetings to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.

Through these initiatives, R&DE maintains a proactive and compliant safety program, protecting both staff and students across campus

Incident Reporting

Technical Training and Development

The Technical Training & Development Program ensures MCP staff receive essential safety, technical, and professional development training to maintain compliance and enhance skillsets. Key responsibilities include:

  • Safety & Compliance Training – Scheduling OSHA-required safety courses and ensuring compliance through STARS reporting.
  • Certifications & Emergency Preparedness – Offering certification programs, including First Aid, CPR, and AED training.
  • Technical Skills Development – Providing specialized training programs to enhance MCP’s technical expertise and operational efficiency.

This program supports continuous learning, safety, and professional growth within MCP.

Rally Point Exercise

Strengthening Emergency Preparedness

A key initiative of the R&DE Emergency Preparedness Group is the Rally Point Exercise, a hands-on training session designed to ensure staff are prepared to activate, distribute, and use emergency supplies in a crisis. These exercises bring together participants from across R&DE to strengthen our coordinated emergency response efforts.

  • Hands-On Training – Participants learn how to locate, access, and deploy emergency supplies stored strategically across campus.
  • Essential Emergency Supplies – Rally Points are stocked with MREs (ready-to-eat meals), water, tents, cots, blankets, flashlights, radios, megaphones, and walkie-talkies to support emergency response and shelter needs.
  • Cross-Team Coordination – These exercises foster collaboration among teams, ensuring a swift and organized response in the event of an emergency.

By regularly holding Rally Point Exercises, R&DE ensures that staff are trained, equipped, and ready to support the campus community during a crisis.

Fleet and Property Administration

Supporting R&DE’s Mobility & Asset Management

The Fleet and Property Administration team plays a crucial role in managing and maintaining R&DE’s diverse fleet of vehicles, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and compliance. Their work supports daily operations by overseeing the acquisition, allocation, and maintenance of various vehicles, including trucks, cars, vans, carts, and specialized transport essential for campus services.

  • Sustainable Fleet Management – With a strong commitment to environmental responsibility, the team ensures that R&DE’s vehicle fleet aligns with University sustainability goals, including incorporating electric and fuel-efficient vehicles where possible.
  • Capital Asset Oversight – Beyond fleet management, the team maintains R&DE’s capital assets database, ensuring compliance with University regulations through regular audits and updates.
  • Risk & Compliance Management – The team reviews, processes, and facilitates claims related to fleet and property assets, ensuring efficient handling of incidents while maintaining University standards.

Through strategic oversight and proactive maintenance, Fleet and Property Administration helps keep R&DE’s operations running smoothly, sustainably, and in full compliance with institutional policies.
