Cardinal Clean

Stanford Student Housing custodial teams have been using the award-winning Cardinal Clean system to clean and sanitize close to 100 residence halls since its introduction in 2015. Cardinal Clean was more recently introduced to student residents in all undergraduate residences laundry rooms.  More machines are being installed on campus for student use.  This initiative makes Stanford the first US campus to offer students access to use this powerful and green cleaning solution for free.

The Science Behind Cardinal Clean

Cardinal Clean uses ozone, a potent disinfectant that naturally occurs in our environment.  Ozone is stronger than bleach and is often used to disinfect drinking water. The machine intakes oxygen and tap water then applies 4500V of electricity, allowing two-atom oxygen gas to rearrange into three-atom ozone gas to produce the ozone. Because of ozone’s unique structure, it disinfects molecules using radical oxidation instead of traditional oxidation used by chlorine bleach.
