Community Housing: Housing Types and Costs
Apartments and Houses
Most apartments are part of a complex, but occasionally they are separate units in a house or attached to a house. Apartments may include some or all of the following amenities: pool, laundry facilities, private patio or balcony, and private parking. Most apartments are unfurnished and tenants pay for water, garbage, electricity, gas, internet, cable TV, etc.
A house offers greater space and privacy than any other option, but is expensive. Houses are more likely to have (individual) garage parking and yards than apartments or condominiums .
Average rents for apartments and houses located near Stanford (from Redwood City in the north to Mountain View in the south), as of September 2018:
- Studio apartment: $1,980 to $2,595
- 1 bedroom apartment: $2,600 to $3,030
- 2 bedroom apartment: $3,200 to $3,795
- 3 bedroom apartment: $4,250 to $4,770
- 3 bedroom house: $4,600 to $5,340
- 4 bedroom house: $5,200 to $7,160
Cottages
Some homes have a separate structure on the same property. These were usually built as guest quarters. They are often charming and in nice neighborhoods, but many were not built to be occupied year-round. If considering a cottage, ask about insulation, how it is heated or cooled, and for estimates of the utility costs.
Work Exchange
A room in a house is sometimes exchanged for work (usually yard work, housework, or childcare.) The hours required and use of house facilities vary greatly. To avoid misunderstandings, a written contract of work expected and hours required is a good idea.
With a work exchange, the monthly rent is reduced. If considering a work exchange, be sure that you have the time to complete your duties and that you are committed to following through.
