Graduate Lottery 2024-2025
FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN RENEWING THEIR HOUSING OR APPLYING FOR HOUSING
How do I apply for summer 2024 housing?
You may apply for Summer 2024 on Axess between Wednesday, April 3 and Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Under the My Information menu in Axess select Housing & Dining, select Housing & Dining Login, and then Apply for Housing to submit your application. Axess may require you to reauthenticate when selecting the Housing & Dining Login. You may apply anytime during that window and will receive a random first-round lottery number.
The deadline to apply or update your preferences on the application for the first-round of summer assignments is Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Summer assignment results will be announced on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
If you miss the Wednesday, May 1, 2024 deadline, apply for the second-round as early as possible, as your position depends on the date you apply. Assignments are made on a rolling basis as students apply, and results can be expected after the first round of assignments are announced on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Assignments will be made up until Friday, July 12, 2024.
Summer assignments only cover the summer term. If you wish to continue in housing into the 2024-25 year, you will need to file a second application for autumn quarter 2024-25.
How do I apply for 2024-25 academic year housing?
You may apply for the 2024-25 academic year on Axess between Wednesday, April 3 and Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Under the My Information menu in Axess select Housing & Dining, select Housing & Dining Login, and then Apply for Housing to submit your application. Axess may require you to reauthenticate when selecting the Housing & Dining Login. You may apply anytime during that window and will receive a random first-round lottery number.
The deadline to apply, update your preferences, or withdraw the application for the First Round Lottery for autumn is Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Lottery assignment results will be announced on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
If you miss the Wednesday, May 1, 2024 deadline, apply for the Second Round as early as possible, as your position depends on the date you apply.
The deadline to apply, update your preferences, or withdraw an application for the Second Round of autumn assignments is Wednesday, July 3, 2024. Second Round assignment results will be announced on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
After the Second Round, Rolling Assignments are made on a rolling basis as students apply from Monday, July 4 to Friday, October 25, 2024.
New students will continue to have a high priority throughout their first year. The assignment priority for continuing matriculated students and postdocs is based on their academic program and years in housing.
If you wish to apply for winter or spring quarter 2024-25, you should still submit your application by the Wednesday, May 1, 2024 deadline or as early as possible thereafter. While your application will not be processed until later in the year, applying early will give you a better position on the list.
The 2024-25 winter quarter applications will be available on September 25, 2024 and are due October 25, 2024 and the 2024-25 spring quarter applications will be available on January 7, 2025 and are due February 7, 2025.
Who can renew their contract for 2024-25 and bypass the Lottery?
Some matriculated students are qualified to renew their contracts for the subsequent academic year in a simple, one-step process that bypasses the Lottery. A student's degree program will be the guide for housing priority and will determine whether or not a student can renew.
Who is eligible to renew?
- Doctoral students (PhD, DMA & JSD) who are living in housing during the spring quarter and have been in housing for fewer than six years.
- MD students who are living in housing during the spring quarter and have been in housing for fewer than five years.
- JD students who are living in housing during the spring quarter and have been in housing for fewer than three years.
- Master's students with children who are living in housing during the spring quarter and have lived in housing for one year.
To qualify for contract renewal, you must:
- Have at least one remaining year of medium housing assignment priority.
- Remain in the same housing (i.e., single student, couple without children or student with children) through the summer and following year.
- Currently have a full-year contract in an on-campus residence.
- Be an enrolled, matriculated student in good academic and financial standing with the university through the year you are renewing.
- Renew by the graduate housing First-round Lottery deadline, Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
I am living in Stanford assigned off-campus housing, can I renew?
Students living in an off-campus subsidized apartment will not be able to renew their contract for the 2024-2025 year, but if they have medium priority years remaining and are applying for the same category of housing, they will receive a special off-campus housing priority in the 2024 Lottery.
I am a non-matriculated student, can I renew?
Non-matriculated students are not eligible to renew their contracts for the 2024-25 year or apply in the first two rounds of the autumn assignments. They should apply for the Rolling Assignments on Axess on or after July 4, 2024 and will be assigned after we have met the demand from matriculated students for their type of housing. If your status changes to non-matriculated student after you renew or have been assigned university housing, you must contact Housing Assignments immediately as you may no longer be eligible for housing.
I have an academic-year contract in an apartment that closes for the summer. Can I renew?
If you are living in an academic-year residence that is closed for the summer, we will not be able to offer you a renewal in place. In order to secure housing for the summer and following year you must submit two housing applications on Axess during the Lottery, one for summer and one for the next academic year starting in autumn, and be willing to accept any other housing assignment that is open all year. If you have medium priority years remaining, you will be assigned in a special renewal process in advance of the Lottery to an apartment that is available for both the summer and autumn so you only have to move once.
How do I renew my contract for 2024-25 housing?
You may renew your contract for the 2024-25 academic year on Axess between Wednesday, April 3 and Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Under the My Information menu in Axess select Housing & Dining, select Housing & Dining Login, and then Renew Your Contract to submit the renewal. The deadline to renew is Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Will I be assigned if I apply for the 2024-25 Lottery?
Regardless of their priority level, we are strongly encouraging all graduate students and postdocs who need housing to apply for the Lottery.
For 2023-24, we were able to accommodate all matriculated students who applied on time and ranked all of the housing options.
I am a coterminal student. Should I apply for graduate housing?
Students with coterm status who are seniors or beyond (i.e. students who matriculated in 2020 or earlier) may apply for either graduate or undergraduate housing. They may not apply for both processes.
Coterms interested in applying for undergraduate housing should complete their undergraduate housing applications before the April 22 undergraduate housing deadline. These students will then participate in the House and Room Selection process like all other undergraduates and will select at the same time as the seniors. Please remember that a meal plan is required in all undergraduate residences, except Mirrielees. Students who transition from undergraduate to graduate status mid-year may not be eligible to move from undergraduate to graduate housing and students will not be granted meal plan waivers due to coterm status. Students with financial need should consult Financial Aid.
Coterms who matriculated in 2019 or earlier (current seniors and beyond) are eligible to apply for graduate or undergraduate housing regardless of their tuition group. However, coterms who have conferred or will confer their undergraduate degree this June are only eligible to apply for graduate housing.
What if I have a medical need for a certain type of housing?
If you have special housing needs due to a disability or documented medical condition, or if your spouse, partner, or child has a disability, you should apply for early assignment through the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). You need to first register with the OAE to get access to the accommodation form. The deadline to submit an application for housing on Axess and submit your Medical Accommodation request form at https://oaeconnect.stanford.edu is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024. Medical accommodation results will be announced by email on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
If you are registering with the OAE for the first time, you should do so by April 10, 2024 or as soon as possible if you miss that deadline, as it may take some time for your housing accommodation request form to show up in the OAE|Connect portal after you submit your initial registration. If you are already registered with the OAE, you should see the housing accommodation request when you log on to OAE|Connect.
If you are eligible to renew your contract and do not need any changes to your assignment, you do NOT need to file a medical accommodation request with the OAE. If you are living in off-campus subsidized housing and require a medical accommodation, you should file a new request with the OAE as you are not eligible to renew.
If you are applying as a group, all of the group members must be eligible for the same accommodation in order to be assigned with you, unless they are a required roommate as part of your accommodation.
Will there be construction or renovation projects in graduate housing next year?
R&DE manages renovation, maintenance and replacement schedules for all residential buildings and their furniture and furnishings. Adhering to these schedules helps us ensure your safety and comfort, keeps us in compliance with applicable building and safety codes, and supports the longevity of residential buildings and systems.
To the extent possible, we work to minimize the inconvenience of these projects for students. Some projects, however, will require relocations. Because this may affect your housing preferences, we are providing here a list of major renovation projects scheduled for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic years.
Please note, schedules and plans can change.

Can I sublicense my apartment if I will be away this summer?
Students who renew their contract for 2024-25 are required to keep the summer portion of their 2023-24 contract. However, students are eligible to sublicense their space to another Stanford affiliate. See the sublicensing website for more details.
Please note that students living in the off campus, subsidized housing program and in academic year buildings are not eligible to sublicense.
If I live in a shared apartment, will I get a roommate this summer or this fall?
If you live in a shared apartment, it is possible that a roommate will be assigned to your unit.
If you have a friend who would like to move into a vacancy in your apartment, please have them either Apply for Housing if they are not yet assigned or Apply for Reassignment if they are already living in R&DE Student Housing. They can add a note on their application in the comment section or roommate preference section listing your name and apartment information.
If you want to be certain you won’t have a roommate, you can request to move to a private studio apartment under the My Information section of Axess by selecting Housing & Dining, selecting Housing and Dining Login and then Apply for Reassignment.
The last date we will make assignments or reassignments for spring quarter is Friday, May 3, 2024. If you are reassigned during the spring quarter you can renew in your new location and bypass the Lottery.
If you or your friend do not want to move until the summer or autumn, you may apply as a group during the Lottery. It is possible for students to renew their contract and still enter group information if they would like a particular friend to join them in their apartment.
What happens if I am assigned housing, but I cannot get to campus because I cannot obtain a visa?
If you need to cancel your housing assignment due to visa issues, you can file a petition within the Axess Housing and Dining portal and request that the cancellation fee be waived.
You may cancel your future housing under the My Information section of Axess by selecting Housing and Dining Login and then Cancel Your Future up to two days before your contract start date.
After that, you will need to file a help request or email studenthousing@stanford.edu to cancel your contract.
If you don’t want to cancel, but your arrival will be significantly delayed due to visa issues, we may be able to hold your apartment for you. File a help ticket with R&DE Student Housing Assignments for assistance.
