General Housing Statistics

Approximately 4,825 graduate students live in on-campus housing, and about 1070 are assigned to subsidized off-campus apartments this year.

Assignments were offered first to guaranteed first-year students, high priority first-year students, continuing students who have not used all of their housing priority years, coterminal students, continuing students who have used all of their years, and finally non-matriculated students. Within each priority assignment group, students were assigned by Lottery number.

Single Students: In the Waiting List assignment round, we were able to accommodate all of the students with a robust list of residence choices. The only single students not assigned were those requesting assignment to only one or to only a few specific residences.

Couples without Children: We were only able to accommodate some of the new students and those needing prioritized assignments due to medical needs. We were unable to assign the other students who applied, although several more will be assigned towards the beginning of Spring Quarter after some maintenance issues are resolved.

Students with Children: We were able to assign three first-year students. We were not able to accommodate all of the students currently living on campus who applied to move into family housing or the students applying from off-campus, but we do anticipate being able to assign several more families during the spring term.

If you were unassigned in this round, move your application to the continuous assignments round. We will continue to assign students as we receive additional cancelations between now and the fifth Friday of Spring Quarter.

Assignments were offered first to single students who were living in Autumn only housing locations (Mirrielees and the Suites) followed by guaranteed first-year students, high priority first-year students, continuing students who have not used all of their housing priority years, coterminal students, continuing students who have used all of their years, and finally nonmatriculated students. Single Students: In the Waiting List assignment round, we were able to accommodate all of the students moving from autumn only housing locations (Mirrielees and the Suites), the guaranteed and high priority first-year students, half of the continuing students with priority years, and coterminal students living in autumn only housing. We were unable to assign some of the continuing students with priority years, some of the coterminal students and the continuing students without priority years.

Couples without Children: We were only able to accommodate guaranteed students and high priority students. We were unable to assign the other students who applied.

Students with Children: We were able to assign the guaranteed students, a few of the high priority first-year students, and one continuing student needing a medical accommodation. We were not able to accommodate all of the students currently living on campus who applied to move into family housing or the students applying from off-campus.

If you were unassigned in this round, move your application to the continuous assignments round. We will continue to assign students as we receive additional cancellations between now and the fifth Friday of Winter Quarter.

References to students seeking assignment apply to students who do not currently have a housing assignment for 2016-17. Students seeking reassignment refers to students who were assigned in the Lottery and are seeking a reassignment to a higher assignment preference within the same housing category.

Single Students: In the Waiting List assignment round all new incoming graduate students and continuing graduate students with housing priority, who were willing to live in any residence (including the off-campus subsidized housing), were assigned. There are still new incoming graduate waiting for housing because they either limited their choices or applied after the second round deadline. The only coterminal and continuing graduate students who were assigned to housing in this round were special exemptions for students with documented medical needs, law students with a priority to Munger or were assigned to Oak Creek two-bedroom, triple occupancy apartments or the Suites at Governor’s Corner.

Couples without Children: In the Waiting List assignment round a number of the new incoming graduate students who were willing to live in any residence, including all the off-campus subsidized housing were assigned. There are still a number of guaranteed and high priority new incoming graduate student waiting for housing. The only coterminal and continuing graduate students who were assigned to housing in this round were special exemptions for students with documented medical needs or law students with a priority to Munger.

Students with Children: In the Waiting List assignment round all the students with children were assigned if they listed every housing option.

2016-17 Autumn Quarter Graduate Housing Lottery Results

Overall First-Round Lottery Statistics

In the 2016-17 Lottery there were a total of 6,505 students who applied for Graduate Housing. After the first round there were a total of 724 unassigned students (38 new students, 211 coterminal students, 293 continuing students with housing priority years remaining, and 348 continuing students without priority years). For more details, see below.

Single Graduate Housing

All single students who applied for graduate housing by the deadline were assigned a random application number from 0001 to 3500. (Current students living in Single Graduate Student Housing who renewed their housing contracts were not given application numbers.) Students who requested to be in a group were given a common number.

New graduate students who apply by the first-round Lottery deadline and select that they are willing to live anywhere on campus are guaranteed housing. Munger and the GSB Residences are not automatically assigned out of the final choice “assign me anywhere on campus” due to their price. These options were only assigned to students who specifically listed them on their applications.

New Graduate Students (who will be in their first year of graduate study at Stanford):

247 of those assigned were Graduate School of Business assignments to the GSB Residences.
29 of those assigned were exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.
7 of the unassigned new students are still guaranteed because they indicated that they were willing to live anywhere.
28 of the unassigned new students listed restricted choices and so are no longer guaranteed. They will still maintain a high priority for assignment.

Renewals:

2719 single graduate students were eligible to renew their contracts for the 2016-17 and bypass the Lottery.

Continuing Graduate Students with Housing Priority (PhD, JSD, MD, JD):

10 of those assigned were Graduate School of Business assignments to the GSB Residences.
65 of those assigned were exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.

Coterminal Students:

21 of those assigned were exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.

Continuing Graduate Students without Housing Priority:

2 of those assigned were Graduate School of Business assignments to the GSB Residences.
51 of those assigned were exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.

All students who applied for Couple without Children Housing by the deadline were given a random number from 0001 to 1000. (Current students living in Couple without Children Housing who renewed their housing contracts were not given application numbers.)

New Graduate Students (who will be in their first year of graduate study at Stanford):

13 of those assigned were exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.
All of the new couples without children who indicated that they were willing to live anywhere were assigned.
Three of the unassigned new couples without children listed restricted choices and are no longer guaranteed housing, but will still maintain a high priority for assignment.

Renewals:

362 couples without children were eligible to renew their contracts for the 2016-17 and bypass the Lottery.

Continuing Graduate Students with Housing Priority (PhD, JSD, MD, JD):

16 of those assigned were exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.

Coterminal Students:

Three students were assigned with exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.

Continuing Graduate Students without Housing Priority:

Five of those assigned were exempt medical accommodations or staff assignments.

Students with Children Housing

All students with children who applied for housing by the deadline were assigned a random application number from 0001 to 0500. (Current students living in Student with Children Housing who renewed their housing contracts were not given application numbers.)

New Graduate Students:

All 81 of the new students with children were assigned.

Renewals:

168 students with children were eligible to renew their contracts for the 2016-17 and bypass the Lottery.

Continuing Graduate Students with Housing Priority (PhD, JSD, MD, JD):

One of those assigned was an exempt medical accommodations or staff assignment.
All but six students with housing priority were assigned.

Continuing Graduate Students without Housing Priority:

One of those assigned was an exempt medical accommodation or staff assignment.
None of the students without housing priority were assigned, unless they had a medical exemption.
