Mirrielees House for Graduate Students

Mirrielees MainInformation on this page:

Overview

Mirrielees is primarily an apartment residence for upperclass students, but we will be offering 75 spaces to graduate students for Autumn Quarter only. Those students will have priority to be reassigned to graduate housing in the winter term.

Built in 1972, Mirrielees was originally part of the nearby Escondido Village graduate community. Each furnished apartment has a small living-dining area, a kitchen, and bathroom. Mirrielees houses approximately 290 students with one person per bedroom – two-bedroom apartments house two people and three-bedroom apartments house three people.

Edith Ronald Mirrielees (1879-1962) is the namesake for Mirrielees House. A member of the class of 1906, Edith earned her bachelor’s degree at Stanford in January 1907. As a student she was editor of the literary magazine Sequoia, an associate editor of the Stanford Quad yearbook, and co-founder of the women’s honorary society, Cap and Gown. She joined the English Department in 1909 as an instructor in writing, rose through the ranks to full professor, and retired in 1944. In addition to teaching she was a prolific writer and in 1959 published Stanford: The Story of a University. Professor Mirrielees instructed, mentored, and became friends with John Steinbeck, and he wrote the introduction to the final edition of her classic book on writing.
