Overview of the 2020-21 Winter Housing Allocation

Typically, upperclass students apply for winter housing through a process similar to The Draw. This year, we will instead be implementing a new Winter Housing Allocation process that places a greater emphasis on ensuring friend groups can live in the same residence.

 

What is the Winter Housing Allocation and who participates?

The Winter Housing Allocation is the process by which upperclass undergraduates will be assigned for winter quarter 2020-21 only. The Winter Housing Allocation is only for single upperclass undergraduate students who have been specifically approved to live on campus for winter quarter and who will be enrolled in classes ful time. Graduate students, undergraduates with partners and undergraduates with children are accommodated in graduate student housing.

Students returning to campus for spring will apply during the winter quarter through a different process. Information will be emailed to students and posted online at a later date.

How do you participate?

To submit your Winter Housing Allocation application, log onto Axess and select Housing and Dining from the Student drop-down menu. On the housing application, you will rank all of the residence choices available. For students applying as a group with friends, only the first person to apply (designated as the group leader) ranks the residence choices. Other members of the group will not see or rank residence choices, as they will be set to match those listed by the group leader. Be sure to submit the application only after reviewing in its entirety. You will receive an email confirmation once your application is received.

The Winter Housing Allocation application for winter quarter will be open for approved students to apply, edit or withdraw applications from the night of Friday, October 16 to Friday, October 30 at 5:00 p.m. PST.

Housing Guarantee

If you're an upperclass undergraduate approved to apply for housing through the Winter Housing Allocation, you will be guaranteed an assignment if you apply by the deadline and maintain your eligibility for housing. 

Group Applications

Students have the option of applying as a group in order to live with up to seven of their friends who are also approved to live on campus. Students indicate their desire to apply as a group in the group section of the application. The first group member to apply establishes a group name and password which the other group members will use when they submit their applications.

Before the first person submits an application, the group should come to consensus on the order in which to rank the housing options. The group leader (the first to apply) will see and rank the residence choices. Other group members will join the group but won't see or rank the housing preferences. All group members will have their residence choices set to match those of the group leader. This will be done by housing staff after the application period has closed.

Residence Choices

Housing options in the Winter Housing Allocation will be limited due to the low number of undergraduates on campus and the need for physical distancing. At this point in time we expect to assign undergraduates to single rooms, 2-room doubles, and-apartment-stye units. We will assign to a complex or building,rather than to individual houses within complexes, except for the ethnic theme houses.

Medical Accommodations

Students who need special housing consideration through the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) go through a special assignment process called Medical Accommodation Assignments. This process exists to ensure that students with documented medical needs receive housing suitable to their needs. In order to participate in the medical accommodations assignment process, students who are not currently registered with the OAE should register and submit paperwork through OAE Connect immediately. Housing Accommodation Request Forms and housing applications (including group members') are due to the Office of Accessible Education by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 23.

New in 2020-21

All students approved to be in housing for winter will be guaranteed an assignment if they apply by the October 30 application deadline.

Assignment Process

  • The maximum group size has increased to eight students.
  • Students assigned to housing through the Winter Housing Allocation will be assigned with a housing contract covering only the winter term. Students continuing on for spring quarter will apply for spring housing during the second half of winter quarter.
  • Students will be assigned to a private sleeping space in a single room, a 2-room double, or an apartment-style unit.
  • On the housing application, students will be required to rank all residence options.
    • Students applying in groups will be required to have their residence choices in the same order, and only the first person in the group to apply will see and rank the residence choices.

Housing Options

  • Students will rank singles and/or 2-room doubles in complexes or buildings such as Governor's Corner or Branner rather than in specific houses such as Naranja or Kimball, except for the ethnic theme houses.  
  • Students will not be housed on the Row except for in Muwekma, an ethnic theme house.
  • Each student will have a private sleeping space.

Dining

  • Students living in all residences will be required to have a Stanford Dining meal plan.

Additional Information

  • Students in housing for both winter and spring quarters may need to move to a new assignment for spring quarter.
  • Guidelines and policies related to COVID-19 may change and students will be required to comply with county and Stanford guidelines in order to live on campus.
  • The move-in process for winter quarter will be unlike previous years. Planning for how students will move-in is underway and we will have more information about this process soon. Students are advised to hold off on booking flights until they are told exactly when they will be able to move into their assignments.

Mid to Late November

  • R&DE Student Housing Assignments announces results of the Winter Housing Allocation

Planning for how students will move-in is underway and we will have more information about this process soon. Students are advised to hold off on booking flights until they are told exactly when they will be able to move into their assignments.
