Residence Agreement Contract Dates
This resource exists to help students understand when their contracts may begin or end. Contract start and end dates are dependent upon the type of housing a student is assigned (graduate or undergraduate), their category of housing (single, couple, family), their academic program, and the location of their housing assignment.
The information on this page is intended as a guide only. Your actual contract dates can be viewed within the Axess Housing and Dining Portal after you are assigned to housing. Please note that you may be required to schedule a move-in appointment that differs from your contract start date in order to ensure a staggered arrival of students onto campus. If you are required to schedule a move-in appointment, your billing will begin on the date of your move-in appointment. Additional information about move-in appointments will be included in your assignment letter.
Graduate Housing Contract Dates
Single Students and Couples without Children Living in Full-year Buildings
Full-year contracts are available in Lyman, Munger Graduate Residence 1, 2, and 3, Rains, Escondido South, Escondido Village (including Kennedy Graduate Residences), and Escondido Village Graduate Residences (EVGR).

- If you are not living on campus in summer 2022 and wish to move in early, you may choose to start your contract on August 26, 2022, September 2, 2022, September 9, 2022 or September 16, 2022. Your housing charges start on the date you select even if you move in later.
- The following academic programs begin early, so students may select the following dates as applicable:
- Pre-Clinical Medical School Students –August 19, 2022
- First-Year Law School Students and LLM students –August 29, 2022
- If you have a full-year contract, you may terminate the summer portion of your contract by filing a Termination of Occupancy form in Axess before the start of the summer quarter (see “Terminating an Agreement”). However, you must keep your summer contract if you are renewing your contract for the following year.
- If you have a contract for summer 2022 and are assigned for autumn 2022-23 your summer end date will be extended to September 1, 2022 and your new contract will begin on the same day so that you can remain in continuous occupancy.
- There are a small number of autumn-only contracts offered for autumn quarter. Students in this contract have the ability to join the first round of winter quarter assignments and apply for a contract to begin winter quarter through the end of the annual contract period. They will be given the same priority level and Lottery number that they had with their autumn-only assignment. In a few cases, students may be able to remain in their autumn-only assignment for winter and possibly spring quarters depending on when the space may be needed for other purposes.
- Graduate students in the MSx program have a special contract length of July 1, 2022-July 2, 2023
Single Students and Couples without Children Living in Academic-year Buildings
Academic-year contracts are available in Munger Graduate Residence (Building 4 and Jacobson-Sorensen Hall) as well as select areas of Escondido Village and the Escondido Village Graduate Residences (EVGR).

- You can terminate occupancy at the end of any quarter by filing a Termination of Occupancy form in Axess by the applicable deadline (see “Terminating an Agreement”). However, you must keep your entire contract, including summer, if you are renewing your contract for the following year.
- If you have a contract for summer 2022 and are assigned for 2022-23, your summer end date for 2021-22 will be extended to September 1, 2022 and your new contract will begin on the same day so that you can remain in continuous occupancy.
- Graduate students in the MSx program have a special contract length of July 1, 2022-July 2, 2023.
Undergraduate Housing Contract Dates
Undergraduate Housing refers to all undergraduate residence halls, suites, apartments, small-group houses, Greek housing, and co-ops.

Notes:
- New freshmen and transfer students are not allowed to arrive early for autumn quarter unless they are participating in an NCAA athletic team that stays on campus for pre-season activities or are an international student approved for early arrival through the Bechtel International Center.
- Freshmen and transfer students who are 25 or over should apply for graduate housing. Freshmen and transfer students may apply for couple without children or student with children housing, if eligible.
- All enrolled freshmen and transfer students are required to live in a University residence designated by R&DE Student Housing Assignments, unless otherwise announced. During the first year, losing eligibility for university housing will also likely lead to a loss of student status, unless an extraordinary exemption is granted from the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
- All undergraduate residences close during the Winter Break between autumn and winter quarters. Students must move out of housing by 12:00 p.m. on December 17, 2022, and may not return to housing until winter quarter move in. Residences remain open during the spring break period.
- Students who apply for and are assigned 2023 summer quarter housing will have continuous housing between spring and summer quarters. Their move date will be specified on the spring-summer move chart available on or around April 2023 and students must be available to move on their move date which will normally be different from the standard dates listed above. Students are charged regular housing rates for this period.
- Students in Undergraduate Housing working at Commencement with approval may be allowed to extend their stay in housing until 8:00 a.m. on June 19, 2023. These students will be billed at the late departure per diem rate per day.

Upperclass students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) who request and are granted early-arrival housing in autumn or request and are approved for late-departure housing are charged a premium per diem rate for each day before or after their contract dates.

All undergraduate residences close during the Winter Break between autumn and winter quarters. Students must move out of housing by 12:00 p.m. on December 17, 2022, and may not return to housing until winter quarter move-in. Residences remain open during the spring break period.

Students in Undergraduate Housing who are participating in Commencement in June are allowed to stay in housing without additional charge through 2:00 p.m. on June 19, 2023, if requested. Check with your Housing Service Center in spring quarter to be sure you have been added to the late stay list.

Students in Undergraduate Housing working at Commencement with approval may be allowed to extend their stay in undergraduate housing until 8:00 a.m. on June 19, 2023. These students will be billed at the late departure per diem rate per day.

Stanford Hopkins Residences
This Residence Agreement applies to students who are assigned to and living in Stanford Hopkins Residences, although the dates of the actual contract may be different depending upon your academic program. You must be an enrolled Stanford student during each quarter of occupancy. A guaranteed quarter of housing is removed if you are an undergraduate student staying there in autumn, winter, or spring quarters; and an assignment priority year is used if you are a graduate student staying there during autumn or winter quarter.
Summer Housing Contract Dates
Students who wish to live on campus for summer and do not have a full-year contract in graduate housing can apply through the summer Lottery process. The normal length of agreement for summer is June 24, 2023 until August 20, 2023, but if you have a spring quarter contract, you will have continuous housing between the two quarters (see below). Students with 8 or 10 week summer contracts may request to change contract lengths. Summer housing charges will be adjusted and fees apply depending on when the request is made. Matriculated Stanford Students in Graduate Summer Student Housing
Students living in Graduate Housing spring quarter who have full-year contracts do not need to apply for summer housing because it is included in their contract length. Students living in academic-year residences during spring quarter, who want summer housing or choose to move to campus before their autumn contract begins, should apply for summer housing.

Students who have an autumn contract will have their summer end dates extended to the start of their autumn contracts so they have continuous housing. If they need to move to a new location for autumn, the actual date of the move may be adjusted by the Housing Service Center when the new housing location is ready for occupancy.

Enrolled Summer Student Visitors (Non-matriculated Stanford Students)
Graduate and undergraduate visiting students who are enrolled for the summer can apply for housing for the eight-week summer term during the Summer Lottery. Visiting students are not eligible for the ten-week contract length or interim housing.
Other contract lengths may be available for students in specific summer programs.
