2023 Winter Closure

Winter break is just around the corner! Here are a few important tips and reminders as you prepare to leave campus for the break.

Winter Closure Dates

Please keep in mind that all undergraduate residences will close at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, and reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2024. You will not have access to the building and your card access will be turned off during the closure. If you will be returning to campus for the upcoming winter term, you do not need to remove your belongings from your room, but you will need to leave campus by 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16.

Inspections and Projects

R&DE Student Housing will inspect all undergraduate student rooms and apartments during winter closure to check for maintenance and health/safety concerns (e.g. incense, candles, disconnected smoke detectors, pets, etc.). Please note that violations of the residence agreement, which include storing common room furniture in your room, may result in fines. We may also need to fulfill work orders or conduct maintenance during winter closure.

Winter Break Housing Service Center Hours

If you need assistance during winter closure, the Ginkgo Housing Service Center at Crothers Hall will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on university holidays. This year, university holidays are on December 25, December 26, and January 1. You can reach the Ginkgo Housing Service Center at (650) 721-2765 or through this contact form. For lockout or maintenance assistance when the Service Center is closed, please contact the After-Hours Emergency Maintenance Line at (650) 725-1602.

Graduate Housing Service Centers

During winter break all Graduate Housing Service Centers will maintain normal business hours, with the exception of the following dates:

  • University Holidays (Monday, December 24; Tuesday, December 25; Monday, January 1), when all Graduate Housing Centers will be closed.
  • Reduced Office Hours (Sunday, December 24; Sunday, December 31): The EVGR Housing Service Center will be available by phone and email both days from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Winter Break Checklist

  • Move Your Car from Closed Parking Garages
The Knight Management Center Garage, Roth Way Garage, Wilbur Field Garage, and Roble Field Garage will be closed for cleaning during the winter break. Check the Stanford Transportation site to find parking alternatives.

  • Pack Important Items
You will not have card access to the building during winter break, so don’t forget important items such as passports, IDs, and medications. Remember to take any valuables with you (cash, jewelry, etc.). Collect your clothing from the laundry room.

  • Turn Off & Unplug
Turn off the lights. Unplug your electronics and appliances (except for full-size refrigerators). Unplug your mini fridge, but leave it open with a towel at the base to prevent mildew.

  • Take Out Trash
Remove all trash and recycling from your room and bring it to the corral outside your building. Empty your refrigerator.

  • Lock Up
Lock your windows and doors. Secure your bicycle to a bike rack or in your room. Bikes left in common areas will be removed. If you cannot secure a door or window, please contact your Housing Service Center.

  • Get Your Mail & Update Your Address
Collect your mail or packages from the parcel lockers and the Tresidder Package Center. Make sure to change your shipping address for packages set to arrive during winter closure. Packages will not be held at the package center over winter closure and will be returned to sender after nine days.

  • Don't Abandon Your Animals
Do not abandon your animal in student housing or release it outdoors. Animals left inside often die of dehydration and starvation before they are found by cleaning staff. If you or a friend have a pet you cannot keep, try to find a good home for it. If you cannot work it out, or if you find a lost or abandoned animal, please contact your Housing Service Center for help. We will work with you to rehome it.

  • Clear Vacant Rooms
If you have a vacant bed space in your room, please clear out any belongings you have stored there. The space will be cleaned, and you may be reassigned a new roommate for winter quarter.

  • Leaving Campus?
If you are not returning to campus for winter quarter, please remove all items from your current room and return your key to your Housing Service Center. Unreturned keys are considered lost and must be replaced. You will be responsible for the rekey cost.

When You Return

Winter quarter begins on Monday, January 8.

R&DE wishes you a very happy holiday season!

Please contact your Housing Service Center with any questions about winter closure.
